December 2017 edition of the Probit newsletter

Dear member of the Probit research panel:

As 2018 draws near, we would like to share some of our recent survey results regarding the shifting outlook on the economy and social class. These look at the economic outlook – both backward and forward – and where panel members locate themselves in the new class order.

Your views

In a recent poll, the vast majority of our newer panel members (83 per cent) think they have either stagnated financially or fallen behind over the past year (only 15 per cent have moved ahead). Using a five-year rearview mirror, things are not much better: 79 per cent think they either stagnated or fell behind. Looking to the future, the patterns are no more encouraging: 26 per cent think their financial situation will improve in the coming year, while 36 per cent think it will improve in five years.

In terms of class identification, 44 per cent of panel members consider themselves as middle class.

Further to their impressions of changes in quality of life, when asked about how their overall quality of life compares to previous and future generations, only 16 per cent of panel members – a rather shocking finding – think the next generation will do better than the previous.

Probit: What We Do

The key principle of Probit‘s methodology that distinguishes our panel from others is that the Probit research panel is probability-based. This allows us to accurately project survey data to the total Canadian population versus non-probability opt-in online panels. For more on this subject, please click here.
